I am trying to identify the Pike County residents in two photographs. My mother obtained these photographs from Miss Mallie Fuqua in the late 1960's or early 1970's. We were related through the Parker side of the family. Our grandfather was John B. Parker of Spencer Township, Pike County Missouri. I am a descendant of his daughter, Elizabeth Parker Crowdis (Crowder). Miss Mallie was a granddaughter of Maryann Adeline Parker Pitt, Elizabeth's sister. Elizabeth was born in 1823 and Maryann was born in 1834. I am interested in knowing if anyone can identify these individuals. I expect them to be Parker's but I can't be sure. Also don't have a date they were taken. One is a picture of a couple taken by the Carver Studio in Vandalia, MO. and the other is a family group of mother, father and three girls and three boys ranging from approximately 20 to 22. Please contact me if you think you could help identify these people and I will forward a scan of the photos.

Hello, I wonder if anyone has information on Daniel Hearn who lived in Ashley township. He was listed in the 1870 census as Daniel Herring and his wife was Jane. It looks like he was born ca. 1835 in Ohio. Jane was born ca. 1834 in Ohio. Their children: Isaac; John; Henry; Isaiah (or) Josiah and James. I only found him in the 1870 Pike County census. If anyone can help me with the descendants of Daniel and Jane or mor information on Daniel, I would appreciate it.
Thank you very much, Jessie Hutt

Henry Parkis born circa 1781 married Jane Shearer born June 11, 1794. They had a daughter Elizabeth born in 1823 and another daughter Amanda Jane born in 1825 in Pike County Missouri. The family moved to Pike County Illinois and are burried there Henry (1847) and Jane (1873).
I can find no record of the family in Pike County Missouri in any online record.
Does anyone know of this family? When did they arrive in Pike County Missouri? From where did they come? I am also looking for their ancesters.
Amanda Parkis married Strother Grigsby on July 16, 1846 in Pike County Illinois. Strother Grigsby was a teacher who study the law, was admitted to the Pike County Bar and ws elected to public office as a Whig. In 1854, Strother helped to form a new (Republican) political party attending the Convention at the "Wigwam" hotel in Chicago (called the "Wigwam Convention").
Strother Grigsby ran as a Republican for public office in 1855 and was the only Republican elected in heavily Democratic Pike County Illinois. He was elected to the office of Pike County Judge and served two terms. Judge Strother Grigsby was at the courthouse in Pittsfield on the occasion of the Lincoln/Douglas debate that was held there in 1859.
Most of my Grigsby, Ruffin, Carroll and Stark ancestors are burried in the Jordan-Buffalo Cemetery in Pike Couny Missouri.
Any information regarding the Parkis family in Pike County Missouri before they moved to Pike County Illinois will be greatly appreciated.

Was married to John Thomas Elliott 15 Feb 1868. to that union one son John Thomas Elliott was born 10 Jan 1873. Married William Hoskins 17 Jul 1877 Pike Co, MO. I think but cannot prove that Margaret had 2 brothers, William H <1845> & George W <1846>. Possible parents were Samuel & Mary Reedy both whom were born in KY. The union of Margaret & William Hoskins produced a son, Emert Hoskins, born in Eolia and Died in Pike County, Illinois. Also another son, Horace Hoskins 1883-1968 who was born as well as died in Eolia, MO. Also possible daughter, Alma Hoskins, b. Aug 1890 in MO. In a letter to her Grandaughter, my aunt, Nellie Elliott, (Postmarked... 29 Mar 1939...) Margaret writes about her father and Emert being burried in the same cemetery. I am guessing they were both burried in Pike Co. MO. even though Emert died near Pearl, IL. John Elliott Died in Pittsfield Hospital 7 Sep 1951 and was Burried at Humphrey Cemetery, Bee Creek, IL

I am searching for information on my grandparents, Elmer Lon Casey and his wife Annie Thornhill Casey, who reportedly were buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Eolia in 1956. Their daughter (my aunt) Marion Casey Parkin (1903-1988) and her husband Claude Parkin are also reportedly buried there.

Marion and Claude lived on a farm that was reportedly about 4 miles west of Eolia which we hope to find. The mailing address in 1943 was RFD #1, Eolia. It would have been owned by them or Elmer and Annie Casey. Any suggestions on how we might find records of where the farm might be?

Thanks, and I hope you could please help us.

I traced my grandfather to Louisiana City, Missouri at the 1910 census on a street, which I could not find. The street is listed as Vandeventer Hill (sp?) and he worked as a shoe cutter at a local shoe factory. I can't find the factory but I think I have a picture of it with the name "Fargo & Phelps Shoe Co" on the building itself. My great grandfather moved from Crete Nebraska to Missouri after 1900 and there are family stories of my grandfather working along side with my great grandfather in the shoe factory but the stories lead to Hannibal, Missouri. So maybe my grandfather and great grandfather worked in both Louisiana and Hannibal shoe factories. I don't know. My great grandmother was traced to Mexico, Missouri and then was listed in a 1910 Pike County "Illinois", Ross Township census which doesn't make sense unless Pike MO and Pike Ill are connected at the border. My great grandmother was traced to Mexico, Missouri on the 1910 Census and again on the 1910 Pike county Illinois census and she was listed as widowed. I don't know how it is possible to be listed on two separate census forms for the same year. Anyway, I would like to know if anyone has information on the shoe factory, where my great grandfather may have met his demise (MO & IL don't have him listed in death records), the street where my grandfather lived in Louisiana, MO and anything else about my family. My great grandfather kind of fell off the earth between 1900 and 1910 in Nebraska, Missouri or Illinois. There are some family stories about someone in my family that robbed a bank in Missouri and then dispersed the proceeds to the locals while making a get away. If he was caught, that might explain why my great grandfather disappeared and his spouse marked "widowed" on the census. Lastly, my great grandmother's name was Lillian Effie Blaine Fike (Fike being her married name and Blaine her maiden name) and she went on to remarry William Shetler possibly in Pike County in or around 1910. Her parents lived with her and they where Martha and Richard Blaine (Richard served in the Civil War Co F Illinois 28th Illinois Inf.) and attended GAR meetings (I have a picture of several Civil War Veterans in front of a house with my great great grandfather). My great grandfather's name was John Fike and his son he worked with was Floyd O Fike. Floyd had two brothers and a sister...Benjamin Fike, Lyle Fike, and Ruth Fike. Thank you very very much if anyone has any information on my family. Just send me an email if you want a copy of any pictures.

I just found this site. I am interested in William Patterson. My great-great grandfather was William Patterson. I cannot find anything on him. His son was James William Patterson born 1824 in PA. He died in Butler Co., MO. in 1906. I found in W.VA. this statement when he got married to Sarah A. DeLong: James W. PATTERSON, Blacksmith, age 32, widower, b. Penna., son of William and H. Patterson. I see that the William Patterson you have on this site was married to a Hannah and that he also had a son by the name of James. I have always looked for James's father in VA. or PA. I was wondering if this William is your William Patterson.

I am looking for info on James W. Wood. He arrived in Bowling Green in 1871 and stayed until 1880 then he came to Kansas. His Grandaughter recently donated two guns to our museum with the story that she was always told, that her grandfather was the one time sheriff here in Ellsworth Ks. According to our history though that cannot be proven.
We have decided that it may be that he was a one time sheriff there or maybe a city Marshall...or involved in some kind of law enforcement.
Any information would be greatly appreciated as I would really like to come up with some answers for this nice lady. Thank you for your consideration...

I know that my great grandfather, John B. GODFREY, was in Pike Co., MO, at least by 1873, when he married Nancy BENNETT on May 25. In the 1870 census of Pike Co., there is a John GODFREY listed as working on "the railroad". He was a railroad worker for many years, and I suspect that it is he who is listed in the census.

I'm trying to figure out how/why he got to Pike Co. from Ireland and am tracking down history of the railroad that was being built in 1870 for possible clues.

If anyone has any resources for me to check out, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I also have a rather lengthy list of siblings, all listed in the 1850 and 1860 census records as having been born in Missouri. Unfortunately, I can't find any record of the family in Missouri. I believe Peter Shafer married Elizabeth Beene in Pike County in 1829, and I know they resided somewhere in Missouri at least until 1842. Are census records for this period not available, for some reason? I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer.

I am interested in finding out more about my great great grandfather, John Coles Carter (1800-1876), who moved to Pike County from Albermarle County, Va, in 1852. I am particulary interested in an alleged newspaper story about him which said he was jailed for being a southern sympathizer around the time of the Civil War. Also, I'm wondering how he seemed to have lost most of his land after the war.

Thank you.

Surnames: Patton, Laird

My great-grandmother, Mary Ellen Patton Laird, died in childbirth in Pike County, Missouri in 1889. She was married to Cash (Cassius?) Marcus C. Laird in about 1879. They had three children: Harry Samuel Laird (my grandfather) and Hallie Laird (Raphael), twins born in 1886.
I cannot locate any information on either of them, except that when Cash died, he was buried in Annada in April of 1919. I have not been able to locate ANY death records, burial locations, other than that of Cash.
I DO know for a fact that the "Stark" family was associated somehow w/my Grandfather Harry. I also know that Mary Ellen was the daughter of John A. and Sarah Jamison Patton and that John and his father were wagon makers in Pike County. I remember finding information on Patton House, and there was even a connection there.
I also know there was a connection to the Wells family -- I think they took in Hallie and my grandfather when their mother died in childbirth w/a son, Clay.
ANY information would be appreciated as I cannot go farther in my research until I can "let this lost connection" rest.
Am I allowed other questions or is this the only one I am allowed?
Thank you so very much,
Pat Yarber

Surnames: Cole, Carroll, Mackey

I have a copy of a reminiscence of a lady who lived in South Dakota, and who was descended from people who emigrated from County Roscommon, Ireland to America and eventually lived a time in Pike County. In 1869 several families left Pike County together in a wagon train for Bon Homme, Dakota Territory. The particular family described in the below excerpt was the Cole family. Mrs. Cogan of the narrative was born Bridget Cole.

"The family lived in Wisconsin for two years and since the weather was
so severe during the winter, decided to go to Clarksville, Missouri
where some relatives and friends lived. They went down the
Mississippi by steamboat to Clarksville, near St. Louis. They rented
the Mackey plantation near town and prospered, raising saddle horses,
cattle, and doing general farming. The large plantation house became
the scene of many parties, dances and enjoyment for the entire
community.

Barney who worked in logging camps was called Jack La Farge by the
French cook so the uncle wouldn't find him. He grew into a tall boy
and being an avid reader, entertained the men in the evenings reading
to them around the campfires. The logsmen took Barney with them on a
raft floating logs down the Mississippi to their lumber market in St.
Louis. He was over six feet tall and could do a man's work in the
raft.

After the sale of their logs, the men spent their time drinking and
seeing shows. They spent much time in taverns, but wouldn't let
anyone give the kid drinks. The tavern keeper asked him his name and
said he resembled a family of Coles from whom he bought his saddle
horses. Barney inquired about the family and their names and the
location of their farm. He decided to walk out and see if they were
his family. He reached the farm in the late afternoon and Tim was
chopping wood. Barney asked him if he could stay the night. Tim,
thinking he looked like a wild western man with his buckskin said no.
His mother was a widow and they didn't keep strangers. Barney knew
it was his brother and laughed. He had a very hearty laugh and his
sister, who heard him said, 'Mother, if Barney is alive, that is his
laugh.' His mother looked out the window and said, 'It's a tall man
in Buckskins and not our little boy.' He laughed again and his
sister said, 'That's Barney, I know his laugh.' His mother called
Tim and told him to bring in the young man for supper. His mother
looked at him closely and when he shook hands with her, she looked at
his wrist as he had a birthmark on his right wrist. The mother and
all the family were overjoyed to find their long lost son and brother
at their own door after the long search. Barney stayed on the farm
after telling his employer of his happy reunion with his family.

When the Civil War broke out, Bart and Tom joined the army and Barney
ran off and joined the army at the age of seventeen. When he came on
a furlough, being in the Cavalry with his uniform and pistols, Tim
and his friend Bob Jackson were very much impressed. They decided to
run away and join to get uniform and pistols and then tell their
correct ages and come home. It didn't work out that way and they
served until the war ended. Barney was wounded seriously three times
at Vicksburg, Red River and Winchester. He lost the sight of one eye
and had a neck, shoulder and side wounds. (When the doctor probed
for bullets, they poured raw carbolic acid in the wounds to sterilize
them.)

Every week Mrs. Cogan rode horseback 12 miles to East St. Louis to
read the lists of the wounded and dead which were posted in the post
office. She would notify all the neighbors at church on Sundays.
Since all the boys were wounded at various times, it was an
unpleasant task to tell her mother."

Many times during the night they were awakened and asked to prepare
food for hungry soldiers, both Blue and Gray. They baked soda
biscuits and fried side pork for the men. The mother never turned a
hungry man away saying she hoped some one was feeding her sons."

His wife Melissa Jane (Van Wagner) NORTH went to live in Chester in Crawford Co., Arkansas after 1920-before 1930, with son George NORTH. Charles H. died in 1913 (strange they would pack up and move somewhere I've not been able to find any relatives living, George came back after her death in 1944, and he died in 1976 and is buried in Wright Cem also)

His Granddaugher Cora Belle ALLISON was born in Pike Co., Her first marriage was to Jesse M. Ardrey/Audrey (he died 8 months later in Nov 1918). His obit says they had two children, but I can only find traces of one. I can find no trace of Cora after this until family records place her Married to Robert Ernest COURTNEY (who was living in Audrain Co. in 1920) and living in Louisiana, Pike Co., when my Aunt was born in 1922. The were living in Quincy, IL when my mother was born in 1925, and in Moberly, MO in 1928 when her father William M. ALLISON died at her home. Again I find no trace of her (anywhere) till 1940 when she marries Rober Clark SMITH, and they eventualy move back to Franford area.
